x5 thefts via key cloning

Post by tgenna » Fri May 09, 2014 1:14 pm

I ama new member from Greece
last March, my X5 was stolen and I had both keys in my pocession. There was no sign of forced entry or glass debris.I started searching the net and came across this issue back in 2012 in the UK with BMW thefts with slot keys.
I am not going to describe the whole issue since I am sure you are all aware.
I bought my X5 in 2009 and from 2012 till the date it was stolen, BMW Greece never informed me of the problem and update even when I was there for a service last November.
I don't know if in the UK everyone was informed but I believe that whatever policy is implemented in one country, it should exist for all countries especially if we are talking about the same model car.
I am preparing legal action against BMW Greece and I would appreciate if someone can tell me if there has been another such legal case in the UK or elsewhere. In addition, I would be interested in finding out what were the official statements of BMW.
Thank you

Do you mean the E70 X5 rather than the E53?  I don't think there's been an issue with the E53 as it uses a real key, not an electronic fob.

Yes it is a known problem in the UK and Dealers provided a patch late in 2012 which was called a 'security update'.  The E70 & E71 were covered with other BMWs coming on stream later.  It covered cars made up until late 2011 when BMW changed part of the software/hardware in new builds.

The security update was being done at service time, unless (as on this forum) we knew in advance in which case it was being done on request.  It was not done as a formal recall.
