Gearbox error code

Post by kamb » Tue Mar 25, 2014 12:26 pm

Took x5 in for smoking issue

Upon the scan it had error code for gearbox something along lines

- oil deteriorated
- level to high
- permanent

I have had no issues with the gearbox and it drives fine

Any ideas what to do?

That's going to be one of these 'do I, don't I' debates.

To me that indicates the oil is going bad and perhaps it may have been changed and the box was overfilled.

The only was you are going to know is to see what colour it is.  If it's brown and cloudy then it's pretty much had it.

You need to get underneath with the car level.  There is a proper procedure that needs to be followed which includes the temperature of the oil before you measure it.

'Sealed for life' really only means 60k miles if BMW are to be believed.

Ok guys scanned with bmw 1.4 tool today and got following error

54c6 oil abrasion

This code was deleted before and has come back

I'm guessing its a simple tranny oil change?

What's the best oil to use and how many litres?

On last thing do I need to get adaption levels changed after?

Yes it is an oil change required but you do not need to readapt the gearbox after.

I use the scanner 1.4.0 software so the error is logged under the specific unit. So mine came up under the transfer box module.

If it's gearbox I believe it's something like 8 litres ish. The transfer box only takes 1 litre.

Is the transfer box menu different to gearbox menu on scanner?

I'll check again to see which module it was in from what I can remember it was VTG

Just checked mine unde the scanner and VTG indicates the transfer box. So that is the one litre BMW stuff which I think is the one you have stated above. Only needs the one bottle as it's about £30ish.

Also worth getting the 2 washers for the drain and fill plugs.

BMW Indi quoted £90 to do it

Thought I would ring BMW dealership they quoted £75 so
Probably get them to do it.

Back street garage said do it for £55 but they don't have software to
Update values etc

If you try anything like that yourself...  Always undo the fill plug first before the drain plug...

Means you don't empty the fluid until you know you have a means to fill it again..
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....
Please note...
Anything I say is only from my personal experience and knowledge..
I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Good advice. Also the drain and fill plugs are both horizontal on so you need a pump to refill the box.
