E70 4.8i or 3.0SD

Post by Imy » Wed Jan 07, 2015 10:27 am

Hi everyone,

Am pondering selling my E53 and getting an E70.

My budget will allow for an 08 - 09 model of which I am looking at either getting a 4.8 or a 3.0sd

I only do around 4-5k a yr so Im swinging more for the 4.8

Im thinking this makes more sense?

Also all of my music is streamed from my phone at the moment, I understand this is not a standard feature on the E70, is this straight forward to do? I have albums on my phone but also I use Spotify.

A few models I have see have HUD and rear screen coming up from the centre console - are any of these actually worth having?

Welcome any opinions and advice.

Many thanks
Imy

4.8 all the way

Economy not much different in real world then take in to account fuel price difference it makes it a no brainer with less to go wrong (dpf and turbos-although I know Richard will say latter not an issue)

I've had HUD on loads of demos from both M BMW and audis and I could live without it but again others that have it will swear by it!!
Currently :
2012 Audi RS4 (B8)
2012 Porsche Boxster S (981)
2008 Lotus Exige S (a bit modified!)
2015 Nissan Leaf twin turbo with Nitros

Previously :
2008 BMW X5 3.0sd MSport
2005 BMW 535d MSport

As a HUD user I would say yes simply for not having to look down at the nav when it's running.  It's not an essential though.

DVD player in the back.....I'd go for the much cheaper screens attached to the head restraints option.  At least they are in front of you and at eye level, not down in the middle somewhere.

Streaming via Bluetooth needs a 2010 (LCI) E70 or newer with the later type iDrive.  You should be able to do it via a USB cable though.  Not an easy option to retrofit as it may need coding and a licence key to 'enable' the streaming.  No idea if there is an alternative route to use that will enable it in the pre-LCI cars.

Thanks for the info...

I think I am swaying for a 4.8

Regarding Bluetooth music, if its not an option then I could probably get an adaptor that parrot and blackberry make:

http://www.amazon.com/BlackBerry-60-169 ... nk20339-20

and stream it through this I guess.

If I cant stream music does that mean I cant make / receive phone calls either?

E70 4.8i or 3.0SD

I have both head up display and centre dvd screen.  I would hate screens hanging off rear headrests personally, ocd would have melt down, also the kids love dvd system.

Regarding HUD, it is a great feature and makes car feel that little bit more special, its great not having to look down

That's a fair comment - Although I am not specifically looking for a model with the screen - just the few I have seen have got it so thought it worth querying. Is it an independent DVD drive or do you have to feed it through the front? Are the head phones wireless? I do not want to suffer the never ending peppa pig and curious George theme tunes any more than I already have to.

Worst is sitting on the train in the way into work with the Mickey Mouse clubhouse theme playing non stop in my head!

Kids take the piss - they have their own play room with sky and flatscreen yet still seem to be intent on using the TV in the living room!

just go 4.8i if your not fussed, having owned a diesel x5 did load of miles, but then my milage dropped down to 3k ish ive noticed no real world difference in mpg between my diesel rrs and the ml63, obviously they will be a slight one but when your filling up every 3-4 weeks it only means a few days earlier which you wont notice, you will then have a v8 noise and plenty of power (not saying the diesel wont be powerful) but you just cant beat a v8 petrol.

Word of advise though i was after getting a 4.8i as an alternative to the ml63 and i was looking, emailing for deals to px the rrs etc for around 2 months as i would find one then couldnt get there etc and some were at the garages for months on end and x5s etc dont like been stood un used, rusting and siezing.

Other problem i have now owning the v8 is i find myself using it more and more go to collect things/ site meetings etc that i really should be going to in the van but just look for excuses to drive it!

Thanks for the info and giving me a great starting point. Budget is pretty tight so trying to find the one I want in the spec I want will prove tricky. Seen a few supercharged RRS, but I think the preface lift versions are starting to look a bit dated now, at least the interiors are.

Shad - I have noticed a few of the 4.8i have been listed for a while!
