Tyres

Post by lentil » Wed Jul 09, 2014 12:28 pm

Hi chaps,

Recently bought my E53 X5 3.0D and absolutely loving it  :)

I will be needing two rear tyres soon and wondering what to go for...

Do most people avoid run flats on the X5? I don't particularly want run flats if standard tyres will be fine.

I think the tracking needs doing as the rears are wearing more on the insides. Is it an easy fix?

Naturally I don't want to spend a fortune, but at the same time I want something reasonable.

Cheers for any help :)

E53's didn't come with run flats so you won't need to worry about that.

Have a look on the Forum as there is a long running discussion about tyres.

Thanks Richard. Are you sure about that, its just I briefly had a warning light on the dash about the Run Flat tyres losing pressure.

I'll do a search, thanks.

Shouldn't have RFs on it - not when they came from factory anyway. Could have been changed by previous owner (doubt that though).

Pressure sensor can be hit and miss but a part of the options list. Check the pressure manually, top it up  and reset the monitor. Then see if you get the warning again.
Scn Protect,Alarm Chirp,Ashtray del,Sub install,IV2,Screens,PS2 Media,Chrome rings,Schnitzer pedals,Reverse cam,Silver Grills,F/mirrors,Comp Spkrs,Heated S/W,20"168s,Splash scn,Arches,Remap,LED Tails,ACS Spoiler,'is' Bumper Trim,Rear heated seats,Rear blinds

Cheers Sanj,

I visually checked the tyres when the sensor warning came up. All looked fine so I just reset with the button on the control panel. Hasnt came back on since.

Definitely no run flats on the e53 and I'd keep it that way.

I've had similar issues with the tyre pressure monitor on 2 cars I've bought in the last couple of years. The X5 came n about 100 miles into the journey home from picking it up. My Z4 did the same at about 80 miles. I called the dealer from whom I'd bought the Z4 and he advised that virtually every car he sold, with the system, would give a spurious warning on the drive home. He put it down to the cars standing around for a while without being driven. Why, he didn't know, but neither the X or the Z did it again.

Inside rears do wear more than the rest of the tyre. Don't think you can change that. It's what these cars do with the camber set up. My e39 540 Touring did the same. Make sure you keep an eye on them.

Cheers Denis, will just have to live with the inside wear then by sound of it.

Will mention it to the garage when its time for service anyway.

Based on my own experience I'd have to disagree - a well set up car should have even tyre wear. hen I purchased mine (100,000 miles gao) the rears were shot on the inside edge - I've had two sets on since then and I have the tracking checked every six months when I change from summer wheels/tyres to the winter set and get any adjustments made. they do look as though they lean in too much but I have never seen inner edge wear since I did this

make sure it is a garage that has four wheel drive tracking capability - a lot of them dont. Not even my local Kwik Fit which is a blessing in disguise really.

I am just about to order some new rims for mine as I am having trouble with my current rims as everyone knows. The new rims are
Size 20x9.5j
Pcd 5x120
Offset 35
Cb 72.6

Does anyone know what those numbers mean and if they are close to what would be factory?

Have you had a look at somewhere like alloywheelsdirect?  That will show you the BMW OEM setups so you can compare.

The 'norm' is a staggered set as you have but 9.5" and 10.5" with that size of tyre.

Ignore the part numbers, but this is a typical 20" set:

Front alloy wheels: 20x9.5" ET45
Wheel part number: BMW 36116766068

Rear alloy wheels: 20x10.5" ET30
Wheel part number: BMW 36116766069

Just been through this myself I was diagnosing my EHC inactive fault and noticed the NSR tyre was showing cords on the inner edge, so off to a mates tyre shop for two new boots. Had both rears replaced as the OSR had a Bridgestone Dueler runflat fitted. So a new pair of tyres and a new rear height sensor ordered, hopefully this will sort the rear tyre wear as its sitting low at present.

So I just ordered my new wheels and tyres, I went for:

Width : 10J, 9J
Diameter : 20 Inch
Bolt Pattern : 5x112 - 5x120
Offset : 35 to 40
Colour : Hyper Silver

I opted for Pirelli scorpion zero A tyres, so that's the wheel problem sorted, but the car has gone back in today because of another suspect oil leak, doh!
