Which 1 am I best going for I don't do a lot of motorway mileage only do about 7000 a year

purely from a running cost point of view i would say diesel. it will cost more than an equivalent year petrol but it will be cheaper on fuel and worth more on resale, and a facelift version is nippy enough too i think. an lpg converted petrol might be worth it though if you want more speed.

Petrol. 7k miles a year is nothing - look at the difference in price you will pay between a petrol and diesel, its quite a premium, how long will it take you to recover the premium with driving 7k miles a year? Also diesels are pretty bad on short journey. IMO.

If you genuinely are only doing about 7k miles a year and not much long motorway driving I would actually say go with the Petrol. It will warm up quicker and tbh won't be that worse off compared to the diesel.

The diesel will cost you more to purchase, diesel itself is more expensive per litre, short journeys in a diesel aren't great for the engine etc, oh and you'll find petrol models generally will be better spec'ed.

I agree with the above, I originally drove a pre facelift diesel 2.9 with a nice spec but did feel like I thought it should. Drove a pre facelift 4.6 and a facelift 4.8i and put a deposit on the 4.8 which fell through ended up with a facelift 4.4.

For me a doing low mileage and as it was a weekend toy the sound and feeling were important and the V8 did that and as doing 2-4k miles I could not justify the extra purchase cost of a diesel and the higher fuel cost over the period I envisaged keeping the car.

It also meant I could improve bits and get the car the way I wanted and to me that is what it's about, for some the diesel is better as they are using them every day, and for going to work I have a smart car which does 50mpg  )

It's your choice whichever you choose can depend on budgets use running costs etc whether you have the extra to pay for a diesel over a petrol, and which you prefer, there are a lot out there and its worth taking your time when looking.

I think I looked at probably 15 or so and spec was important and some had panoramic roofs which I wanted but out of the 5 or 6 that had them only 1 worked and that was on the car that fell through. In the end I decided that it would get little use and the cost of the repair to the roof or front air suspension were putting me off.

Good luck with the search, it also may be worth posting up links of cars you are interested in, as others have done this and the forum members have help spot an awful lot from the photos which can help you decide on the quality of the vehicle you are looking at.

I agree, petrol, I do about 6000 miles a year as the X5 is a second car, so having looked around at both facelift diesels and facelift 4.4 V8s I plumped for a pre facelift 4.6iS.  I reckon it saved me £3k upfront, and that buys a lot of petrol.  I've had 5series diesels before, and there's plenty of expensive things to go wrong.  The petrol is a lot quieter, probably better specced and goes like stink.  I did say the novelty of the V8 exhaust note would wear off, but it hasn't yet, big grins every time I drive it.

Fenj how do you arrive at diesel at that mileage? Cheaper on fuel ???????? Diesel costs more than Petrol!

depends on what you like. I cant comment specifically on petrol models as I'm a diesel man, but I rather suspect that the v8 would be fine but cost you a lot in petrol but will have plenty plenty vavavoomf

My pre face lift 4.4 only goes to the shops and back but still gets 18 mpg with a wife with a heavy right foot. Our old car was a 2.0 diesel and that would only do 30 mpg on the same short runs. V8 all the way if only for the noise )

Its a tough one I only did 12k a year in my 4.8iS and it was a thirsty swine with it being heavy, big & 4WD, I loved the noise it made and loved the car itself by I actually think a diesel actually suits this type of vehicle in this country to be honest.

The low down torque of the diesel suits the X5, I agree you aren't doing many miles so a petrol would be fine but I agree with others it will be worth taking both examples for a test drive, I liked the 3.0d I drove.

Well I'm a diesel man in most situations, but with the low mileage I would be drawn to the petrol, and a V8 at that.  If you are going to be hit at the pumps, you might as well have a great sound track to go along with it.  I had a 630i as a weekend car a few years back, and instantly regretted not getting the V8.  Enjoy a few test drives to see what gets your pulse racing.

Don
