I have bought a HID kit (
http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/55w-new-sm ... -kit-slim/)
I've managed all the wiring issues, but getting the bulb in is proving slightly more difficult. Does the new bulb fit directly in where the old bulb was located?

Did you have HIDs before or are you converting from halogen to HID? What type of bulb did you get? D2S or H7 kit?

New bulb should fit exactly as a direct replacement as long as you've bought the correct bulb type when ordering.

If the bulb is correct than it would be like replacing a blown bulb.

apparantly there are 2 sorts of bulb, when I got mine from HIDs direct he asked me if mine was the type with the metal clip or the plastic bulb holder ones.
Mine had the shiny metal retaining clip, but they did not supply new metal clips with the new bulbs/kit
so I had to use a pair of good sidecutters to cut through my old metal clips so they would fit over the cable going to the ballasts. then this allowed me to reuse them.
If yours had the metal retaining clip you will have to do the same, not sure if the difference is pre or facelift headlights or not. Mine is a facelift.
Also mine were H7 Bulbs

Are yes, you're talking about the bulb retaining clips, etc that are needed with some kits. Maybe they are required for your application.

What's all this plastic/metal stuff about?
When I got mine from HIDS they threw in split (albeit weedy) clips so no chopping the original. Mines a facelift so perhaps by luck the clips were what was needed
I'm assuming then that the metal/plastic reference means that the E53 has 2 different lights (OE Xenons excepted)?
Is the PLASTIC reference the refering to pre-facelfit lights?

Thats what the young lad at HIDS direct asked me over the counter. They should include the metal clips inside the box, also there is no mention of different types when ordering on the net/Ebay.
Give them a call if you are unsure, or unable to get them to fit. Probably have to wait until Monday morning though.

I might be paying them a visit soon for another set. When i previously ordered them on the net in Dec 2010 they kindly asked me to remind them to drop some in the kit
They're (the metal ones) over £6 on ebay (search H7 HID Clips) if you don't get them free or are hopeless with a saw or dremel
The kit you need for your X5 isn't listed as yet but we do have the kit you need in stock.
Below is a link to the item you need which is a H7 canbus Pro kit, the only extra part you require is the bulb holders which are metal projector clips. You can still buy the H7 kit and we will send the metal projector clips for you in the kit, please just request this in the comments box at checkout. Once the order has gone through we will pick that request up when processing the order for dispatch on Monday.
Simply choose H7 and the colour temp from the link below and as I said just request for us to send the clips you need for the kit in the comments box
Kindest Regards,

Would you be able take a pic of the headlight assembly? Do you have a projector lens on your headlight? If not you might need a plastic holder which i had to use to upgrade my friend's 2002 3.0d. But it worked just fine with H7 holder. Mostly used on the E46.

I'll take some pics tomorrow to try and help explain what I'm going on about. I did specify when I ordered online the kit would be for a 2001 x5. H7 type bulb

I have a feeling you will need the plastic adapters to accomodate the hids in there. Your bulbs probably had a metal retainer which had 2 wings to secure the bulb in housing.
