Only had my 4.8is a week and anyone who read the problems section will have seen a pic of it on the back of the rac lorry as thought I had major overheating problems.

It turns out that it is a faulty instrument cluster.  My garage couldn't get their diagnostic tools to talk to the main car computer.  However putting in a temp second hand one made everything read ok including the manic heating  gauge.  They checked sensors temps etc before changing the gauge and everyone was ok.  Apparently it was a second hand cluster from a 3 lt diesel in my car and looks as though some one attempted to fix it and did a poor job and damaged it.

So its time for a new cluster  planning to go for a new one.  Local bmw wants quite a bit is there anywhere that might do a good deal?  It is expensive but will be coded to my car guaranteed blah blah.  Probably cost £500 more than getting a second hand one.  Then paying yo get mileage fixed etc and they are notoriously prone to getting pixel damage.  Unless anyone wants to donate a cheap second hand 4.8i one.

Only other issue is some corroded brake pipes.  It getting a service which is not strictly due but it just needs some love and care.

Glad to hear that but are you sure they can code the mileage to what yours is right now (wouldn't surprise me if they could)!

I have heard that the mileage is stored in the ECU as well as on the binnacle. If the two don't match it puts a tell tale dot next to the odometer readout.
I'd check that before you take it as gospel. I know you can't alter the mileage with BMW Scanner 1.4.0, but dealer probably will be able to. Is the mileage still visable, or on the last MOT?

I think I will just suck it up and buy a new one from bmw.  You need a co that does mileage correction and can give u a certification of correct mileage when u have one from another vehicle and will have issues with it being coded to the vin.  There are companies that can sort it and they seem to charge a few hundred.  So that plus a mileage correction certificate thing and then the chances of that replacement not lasting, it starts to add up.

Without all the right documents with a replacement cluster not strictly sure how legal it is to sell.  My current faulty one is about 100 miles out.  Even with its dodgy display u can see the tamper dot.  I do have all old mots etc and yearly mileage adds up.  Think last but one owner changed the dash.

Anyway I would like things to be correct.  If I ever sell it would prefer it all to be legitimate  makes it easier to sell.  This dash that's in could has caused more problem as the car wasnt communicating with itself.  Fortunately no serious error codes but who knows what could have been missed.  So as painful as it is I am going to have to give bmw some money. :'(

An indy with Autologic, Abrites,Bmw explorer tool can code it to your car with correct millage thruu obd slot. Correct me if im wrong please...I've never try it with bmw ista but would love to do it...

BMWs store the mileage in the cluster and another module, dependent on the series. The two mileages have to agree within something like 50 miles, after which the tamper dot appears.

Forget trying to get a dealer to handle a second hand cluster, they won't touch it, nor any other second hand module come to that. Its either new or find someone who knows how to get the milages matched.

mileage is stored within the CAS unit and the Cluster itself.  CAS unit updates the keys if I remember correctly.  my guy can easily sort your problem out.

As long as the mileage is original ( put to the cars true mileage ) legally there is nothing wrong with buying used cluster and having it corrected to the car.

Sorry to hear about the costly bodges from previous owners violet - the 4.8is instrument cluster is pretty distinctive but I guess easily missed if you are not well acquainted with the model of car.  There is probably a cheaper option to replacing it and having mileage corrected, but the BMW route will give some security warranty wise if the installation fails for some reason, the electronics on these cars are pretty complex. 
Your tale of woe with the purchase of the heavily modded 4.8 is hopefully heading to a happy conclusion albeit with a lot of additional expense.

i remember now, its not cas unit, its stored in the LCM and the IKE instrument cluster.

I am based northwest leicester.  I am waiting on a deal from bmw.  Also be g trying to find a 4.8 dash especially if it's different.  I would have never had known it was different  everything appeared in the right boxes even though it was hard read.  I might go down second hand route but by the time I have driven somewhere bought the replacement unit I am not how much it will save me.  Where is your mileage guy placed.  Garage has pulled the proper mileage off the car and it ties up with mot certs etc well.

The slider rails came off today.  More coming out and off the car to make it more normal.  Just looking forward to getting it back and driving it.
