4.8 150 miles towing
Well touch wood re gearboxes - both the X and the S8 have ZF boxes and both have so far been absolutely fine. BMW did renew the transmission fluid under warranty when they repaired a gasket leak, so at least that's been done FWIW and I had the S8's fluid changed as well. I guess you have the option of other gears rather than D for a reason:) to override the cars choice of gear as you feel appropriate, and towing could be one of those times. I generally leave mine to get on with it when towing, but I know what y mean about it staying in a higher gear or changing to one, at a time you wouldn't have thought it would.

I bet the E46 was a tad more reluctant to steam up over Porlock than the X. I find mine would benefit from a 3 litre derv lump day to day >:D

I have never noticed a problem with the gearbox on mine it just seems to drive the same as when I am not towing the caravan it always seems to be in the right gear at the right time
But I have towed with a 318 I auto so that might explain things !
