Apologies for the 'cross-site' linkage to Xoutpost, but this article covers the next generation of 'Connected Drive' that BMW will begin deploying from the end of 2012.......

Hmmm wonder if that's why the X6M50d build date was pushed back to Oct 2012 with delivery Dec??

Interesting, but shite photos.

Whoever directed that shoot needs shooting (and not with a camera!). Amazing how fast the car can travel but it's still in D......muppets!

The likes of IDrive will only get more sophisticated to a point when one day technology has a hiccup and we can't actually get where we want to get to! Look at the problems 'we' had when RBS had a minor computer glitch ;)

Let's hope it doesn't use a Windows OS then or we'll be getting the BSOD at the critical moment!! :)) :))

....and then of course there will be the frightening bill to fix it as no Dealer will have a clue!! >:(

I already think the iDrive is complex enough - certainly for anyone travelling with no 'co-pilot'.

still not a touch-screen? is there any good reason why not?

isn't it so much easier to navigate through all this with a touch screen?

Pass.  Reliability?  Operability?  Dunno.

I know that for the X6, and with me being well over 6' tall it's a long reach to touch the screen.  My E53 screen was much easier to reach - as it had to be as all the buttons were on the head rather than on the iDrive.  Of course I would not expect reach to be an issue for all, or even on all models, so I agree it does seem a little odd not to have included it given that many other systems do these days.  But then that may defeat the idea of the iDrive system that BMW so love......
