Updating SatNav in E70?

The current version in my 2009 X5 is out of date with some new roads missing which gets a tad annoying (and also doesn't know about the A3 tunnel @ hindhead).
Without physically changing the system - is it a case of ejecting the old disk and getting a newer one?
Now has BMW any special encoding which detects that an original disk is in, or if a mate had a newer version could I use say a copy of that?
What about versions from the internet?

Discussions of non-OEM versions are Verboten on the Forum, but you may get some contact.

I doubt the new tunnel will show for at least another year! The Bedford - M1 Jcn 13 Milton Keynes Link has been open for nearly two years and isn't on the 2012 maps. Hindhead Tunnel opening was last July? Next new discs from BMW are due in October 2012.

If you have a hard drive based system then you need three DVD's and a licence key. The key is single use as it works of your VIN. If someone has the discs then you will still need to purchase a key from BMW to unlock it on your car.

Or you go to the dealer and they'll do it for you - for a fee!

New maps are approx £270!

If you have a DVD on board, then yes it's just a case of getting a replacement and swapping it for a later version.
