The first of BMWs next generation electric vehicles has just been announced.

It’s the Neue Klasse (NK) platformed iX3 and will use their 6th Generation battery and motor system which provide significant improvements in both efficiency and cost. The iX3 with in its long range version (aka bigger battery) has an ‘official’ range of around 500 miles. That’s a step change better than the outgoing model.

It’s got some interesting technology on board and will be able to run your home (with a suitable connector installed). So called Vehicle to Home / Vehicle to Grid. A 100kWh battery should do well. My Tesla Powerwall is a mere 13.5kWh but runs my home for up to 26 hours.

There’s a vid all about it here:

I’ll be wanting to have a look and drive before anything else, but it looks interesting. I wouldn’t commit to one yet anyway due to the tanking resale values. Maybe this will improve too.

It’s going to be followed by a new i3 in 2027/8. IX5 is also due. Maybe even an iX4 and iX6 will be offered.

I would add that the styling is a little odd and likely divisive in the same way as the Joji Nagashkma design language of the mid-2000 onwards cars were.

This actually makes the old cars look good.

I guess we’ll have to get used to it, and it’s a lot less ‘spaceship’ or upside down soap bar than many Asian designs (or Tesla & Mercedes for that matter).

Ordered mine last weekend.

Still too spaceship for me, whats with that fuggly angled screen, the smaller kidney grilles are a positive step, though.

Reading over the weekend that new taxes on EVs are being introduced, pence/pounds per mile i read. Inevitable as HMRC coffers are suffering for obvious reasons. A bit like LPG, and diesel, once being trumpeted. Buy, buy, buy, then new taxes inevitably neutralise everything.

I wont ever own an EV so all irrelevant to me :)
