Can I fit a square setupon to staggered wheels.

As there has been several threads about the importance of the equal rolling circumference , I am awaiting delivery of my latest car change.
I've gone for an E83 X3 3.0d Msport. (58 plate )
As the X3 is super sensitive to differences in the rolling circumference between the front and rear axles, and thanks to KKX5's photos of a destroyed transfer case, I'm very conscious that I need to get my tyres as sorted and straightforward as possible. ( the car has mismatched makes on at the moment , but drives A1 )
I dislike Runflats with a passion, and have always swapped them out for normal tyres, as on my E60 & E93. Easy enough on two wheel drive as there is no transmission wind up to consider.
I was wishing my X3 was a square setup now, but alas I prefer the look of the Msport.

I would be careful as a stretched tyre wont be the same height as a none stretched tyre giving you the same problem with the diffs and gear box . One option could be running style 232 or 257 bmw X6 wheels as they still have the same square set up , all four are 9j x 19 but have different offsets . front et 48 which would be rear wheels and et 21 rears which would be fonts which would make you be able to run a square set up .
I think your fronts will be et48 rears et37 . Why are you wanting to go for a square set up ?

It wouldn't be stretched as the back is the same and the front is a narrower rim so would be pinching it in 6mm a side which shouldn't distort the carcase.i wouldn't have thought.
I wanted a square set up so I could get away from star marked tyres that are Runflats and expensive.awfull ride, and skip around the road, worse than the cheapest budget tyres around in my opinion. Also wear a lot quicker too.

I didn't think the E83 came with runflats, but happy to be corrected....

Hi
One thought is you could be clever and go for same size wheel rims all round and also the same size tyres but go for spacers on the rear so in effect giving you the staggered look, but same size wheel and tyre.
That way you a) guarantee the rolloing circumference is the same front to back and b) could even have a spare which can be used on any axle.
On my X5 I had 22x9.5 with 295/35/22 all round and no probs but went back to the 20" staggered set up later agin no probs.
If you go for a proper staggered set up there is a website where you can put I need wheel and tyre sizes and it give you the rolling circumference as you are looking to get them as close as possible to avoid any probs with the transmission.
I'll have a look for the website now for you
Hope that helps
Graeme

Hi your 191M wheels are front 8.5j x 19 , rears 9j x 19 none runflats on oponeo.co.uk vredesteins are £100 , fronts £133 rears . I have run these tyres for the last 4 years on the X5 brilliant !
Still can't work out why you want to alter the tyres to square set up although the offsets are very close to the style 211 BMW X5 which is et 48 square set up , X3 is et46 front , et 51 rears . So they would also fit .
The winter set up is a square set up so can't think why it can't be done !

Alpina s are 8.5 j fronts , 9.5 j rears .

Doing this square set up looks like you are going to have a 3.75mm difference front to back from the original set up in ride height , that may cause a diff fault although no different from having 4 mm on the front and 8 mm on the rears .
Good luck !

Hi
Using your existing set up it shows a 1.1% difference in the overall wheel circumference which is small, and given that is the standard BMW set that level of difference must therefore be acceptable to BMW. And it's transmission to avoid problems.
If you change to same size tyre on all wheels even with different size rims the overall circumference is saying it the same, even when fitted to a smaller rim size, butworth checking yourself. Again the appearance of them may look a bit different on the car.
If you change to all the same tyre on

Hi
Before you press the button on your purchase it may be worth checking the size you are ordering.
The reason is I can see why X5Sport asked about you stretching the tyres
because you said - "buying 4x matching 225/40/19 's eliminating any chance of a differential in rolling circumference????"
But you said you wouldn't be and I think you meant 255/40/19 which is the standard rear size, but if they were 225 they probably wouldn't.
Sorry but I didn't want you to get wrong ones and the company won't change them.

From my experience Uniroyal rain sport 3 works great on staggered x3 235/255. If you dont like RFT or approved star tyres go for Uniroyal. Works great on xdrive x3.

Thank Graeme, you are correct, I put 225 instead of the intended 255, as Sid10 also pointed out the 191 rims are 8 .5 inches front and 9.0 inches rear, so only 12/13 mm difference in width, hopefully 6 mm on each side of the wheel wouldn't distort the carcass ?
