Metal Saw

Post by pvr » Sun May 08, 2011 1:31 pm

I have bought metal guttering to replace the plastic rubbish that exists on part of the house (cast alu).

As I have to saw a lot of the bits, I am looking for an electric metal saw. Any recommendations for this?

Do you know anyone with a 'Chop Saw' or a 'Mitre Saw' It will give a really good cut and all you would need is the right blade instead if the whole saw. It would also let you get the angles spot on. You might need to lube the blade too. If you're feeling flush you could buy your own of course. The only other one I can think of would be a 'Scroll Saw'.

Just a thought?

May be consider HSS Hire then? If the work will happen over a few days rather than spread out.

Good stuff

Just need to work out what the limitation are from each model as it obviously has to be big enough for a 15cm half round gutter to fit in there. Would hate to buy something and I could not get it around the gutter ...

The gutter has been here for almost a year now ... think I will need to buy the unit as I have over 250metres of gutter to hang over a loooong time period :)

Why not try a small hand held angle grinder with a metal cutting disc. No problems with having to fit the gutter into it. It'll cut it like butter

Have a squint at Screwfix for ideas. I doubt that 150mm Ali would give either machine type much to worry about. I've seen cheapo machines for around £100 but some of the tolerances can be a little wobbly.

If you're not bovvered about that and have only straight cuts then an Angle Grinder is probaby good enough - if a little on the 'butchering' side of the job :D . Whatever you go for, make sure you buy discs/sawblades for non-ferrous metals. It does make a difference, honest.

Depending upon the rigidity of the guttering you may want to make up a wooden template that fits inside the guttering to prevent any flexing whilst it's being cut, and to make it easier to keep steady.

Yes, I made the template today and after I made it, I realised that my hacksaw would no longer fit in the template hence my search for something else :)

Besides - I like toys ...

I have found out that I need a 12" mitre for it to be able to cut the 15cm gutter.

Went for this one in the end, as reviews seemed very good and it has a blade on it that can cut aluminium:

Just be super careful with this tool - I ended up with one through 90% of my top forearm muscle 10 years ago... :o

I was a complete idiot...

If you can, bolt the bugger down - moves quite a bit otherwise (sometimes towards you)! :x

Lots of torque there.

I was looking for a Mitre table, but have not found one yet as that is what I would really like.
