Couple of codes and no power...

Post by jimmb1985 » Thu Apr 06, 2017 7:32 am

Hi all, after some advice. 2.0 x3, 2006. Last month or so the car has been getting more sluggish.  No warning lights etc. Plugged it in to my code reader on a whim and it come up with p1278 and p14a7. I'm off today so going to strip the dpf off and give it a once over.  The car literally has no guts at all.

It will not go over 3k or 2k up hill. Any one else had this issue in the past so to push me in a different direction?

Cheers,

James..

The X3's are prone to the DPF not regenerating, I've had my 3.0d for a few weeks now and have replaced the glow plugs and glow plug  controller, and whilst I had the inlet manifold off also did the swirlflap delete.
Also I brought up the hidden menu on the binnacle as my coolant temperature gauge wasn't reaching the halfway mark. I found the coolant temperature was only getting to 68 degrees.i changed the thermostats, now it's getting 88/90 degrees.
If the glow plugs aren't working it won't regen the DPF
if the coolant temp doesn't get over 88 degrees it won't regen
As you have done the diognostics and the glow plugs / glowplug controller havnt shown up as faulty, try the coolant temperature as that won't generate a fault code.
Also short runs and not getting a good blast now and then can be a cause

What horizon said...
Check the needle for your engine temp.

If it doesn't get to the middle of the gauge (exactly middle), it won't regen.

Replace coolant thermostat and then spend a few hours forcing regens until your car starts pulling again. (Over 2000rpm/40mph for at least 5 mins)

Taking dpf out and cleaning will be a wasted effort.
