Lots and lots of fault codes, HELP

Post by van650 » Mon Oct 17, 2016 2:00 pm

Too my 57plate e70 3.0d into a bmw specialist today to have a look at the auto handbrake, came back with a whole list of codes:

These are the worrying ones :-(

425a: Info-Particulate filter: the car has been used for a few weeks on short runs, how do I get it to complete a regen and how do I know it is regening the DPF?

4212:Glow plug cyliber 1, activation
4222:Glow plug cyliber 2, activation
4232:Glow plug cyliber 3, activation
4252:Glow plug cyliber 5, activation
4262:Glow plug cyliber 6, activation

3f35: Charge air tube monitoring at idle

There have been no warnings thrown up by the car, but we have noticed a few times lately it would lose power (Like in limp mode) and then it would return, gave it a drive for about 10 miles after this with the revs kept above 2500 via the manual box (But will this get it to regen the DPF and how will I know that the DPF cycle has run??)

The auto handbrake issues I think is going to be a new actuator as I have changed the switch(the lever had broke anyway, so just changed it)

just one more bit of info the car starts fine, even in the colder weather lately and the battery is supposedly fine.

At a guess it looks like you have issues with the glowpkugs or their controller.  Both are known failure points.  Owners have changed all the plugs only to have the controller pack up shortly afterwards.  Starting will be difficult once the really cold weather starts.

To get the DPF to regen yourself you need to get the car fully warmed up and then run for at least 20 mins with the speed constantly above 40mph and above 2,000 rpm.  The only real way to tell is that if you switch off whilst a regen is ongoing then the vehicle engine fans will continue to run for up to 10 minutes.  This is to stop the heat from the DPF starting a fire - it will be at 600°C or thereabouts and the front of the E70 is plastic, hence the fans.

If the DPF has too much soot then you either need a dealer to set a 'forced regen' in place, or buy the Carly App and adapter and trigger it yourself.

Warnings lights will not come on for any of these issues!

The handbrake actuator is a very expensive part according to those who have been forced to replace it.  Not sure if anywhere other than BMW are supplying them yet.

Loads of posts on the internet saying if you have glow plus out it will not regenerate the DPF.
Not saying that's the fault, but worth a look.

Actuator will cost the best part of a grand.

There is a company who recondions then for £350 and supplies new cables too.  But you must be able to take it of and post it or take it down to them.  They are based in London.
