Re: A Downside of X5 Ownership
yep, ive experienced many of the issues raised here also.
i too have worked very hard to buy my x5, and at the end of the day i could have had a brand new vauxhall/ford/ renault etc with not a second thought from friends/colleagues, but i much preferred a second hand x5 and now spend all my time explaining my "new found wealth!".
yes, its a slightly more costly car to run compared to some, but i service/repair it myself to keep costs down and its been the most versatile car i've ever owned.
i honestly cant see myself changing it out for some time to come.

Yea my sister inlaw has just bought a brand new ford focus for alot more cash than i paid for my X. And yes its not a bad car but my 8 year old X still out strips it on comfort,style and toys
u I like many worked hard and decided to buy an X for all the good things thay can offer apart from the german build quality.

Re: A Downside of X5 Ownership
Tickled me that this thread is still relevant today. One of the cheapest cars I've owned, yet people still make judgements.
Guess they still have an air of affluence and are easier to recognise than an iwc Portuguese that cost over twice as much despite keeping no better time than my iphone.

Re: A Downside of X5 Ownership
I must admit I don't have any of this!
)
The E53 is a old car now! Most of the 4x4's where I live are much newer X5's, Range Rovers & Land Rovers! :-[
I've actually been thinking I need to sell the old girl in the new year & get a newer motor!
Don't get me wrong I love my E53! You get a lot of car for your money & for the money I cant think of a better car to buy!
When I first got a E53 approx 6 years ago there weren't many around but now they've come down in price I see loads! Everyone can bloody well afford one!
)
Still I don't think I can own anything other than a X5 now! Once you've owned one you cant go for anything else!

Re: A Downside of X5 Ownership
I agree they are a good car for the money, just that I felt the E53 was a little dated inside. I was contemplating an E70 but I thought a complete change was in order. I havnt ruled out an E70 for my next purchase as they are getting more affordable for me to justify having one as a weekend run around. As for an SUV you can't match them in my opinion.

Re: A Downside of X5 Ownership
There are maybe 50 people where I work and there is perhaps just one other guy besides me who has a serious interest and any real knowledge about cars. It seems to be that people therefore buy the newest car possible to reduce the risk of problems in older cars. These then tend be cheaper runabouts so they become aware that BMWs are expensive and perecived to be out of reach, making you a moneybags if you own one. This is far from true for me, but I know enough and take the trouble to research potential cars, that I can find good older cars, that represent what is to me sensible value. I suspect these attitudes from others arise from a lack of motoring knowledge-which is their loss.

Whenever I see another e53 owner I don't think about how much money they make, I think about how much money I know the damn thing keeps costing them. Anyone who is truly flush with cash would not persist!!

Re: A Downside of X5 Ownership
Have to agree with most of the above I do get fed up of never getting let out of junctions and no one ever gives way to you, but I really don't care as I love the X5 and most of the time its sheer jealousy from other people.
I take heart in the fact that my car is not on finance and has pretty much lost all it's depreciation already, if people want to drive $hitty french cars or naff ricer crap then so be it I'd rather have my 11 year old BMW than a new Renault or Ford.
The cars coming out now have all been designed during a recession not the best era to buy a car as cost cutting will be biggest part of all design decisions, ask any one who has a 2.0tdi vag about oil pump failures or RR evoque's with a 140% breakdown record in the first 2 years of manufacture.
Sticking with my X5 and don't even get me started on the tree huggers. >:(

Re: A Downside of X5 Ownership
It's not just x5 that get this reaction. Most of my previous cars have had the comments. The worst was my Z4M. Lots of garbage off people and then even worse you had the corsa Halford pimped cars shouting out the window I can beat that car any day. Wrong attention from jealous people and idiot door racers.
Just on an insurance service costs etc (not repairs and I don't do many miles) my X5 only costs £70 a month more than the Honda civic to run. That's one night in the pub for most people.

My insurance is £30 a year cheaper than my previous skoda Octavia vRS couldn't believe it when I rang up to swap it.
Re: A Downside of X5 Ownership
Has anyone had their car 'keyed' before? I've had two 'lesser' cars (Nissan skyline, Mazda MPS) keyed, parked in good areas, but clearly just because someone passed by the car and could tell I cared for it so decided to damage it.
That's my greatest fear with the X5 - if it provokes that kind of jealousy that someone is going to drag a key along it.
You have no idea how gutting it is, moreover, insurance won't pay for it.

Re: A Downside of X5 Ownership
Most people can afford a E53, there not expensive cars! So I see no need for people to be jealous! They should just buy one aswell & enjoy the car like us lot!
