Re: Should i buy one? towing

I purchased a 4.6is a few years ago and it was fully loaded and a bargain at 4.5k.  Mileage was 82,000 miles.  Had it 2 weeks and the timing chain guides collapsed and wrecked the engine.  No one could rebuild it and a new crate engine from BMW was 16k + vat

Re: Expected Garage Cost / time of replacing serpentine belt please?

I would say an hour or so.  I had to remove mine when doing the oil filter housing gasket and it took about 20 mins.  Mine is a 3.0 petrol so,don't know if that makes a difference

Cabin filter locations- 2 off

Hi everyone. Have finally finished my oil filter housing gasket and given the x5 a full service including plugs etc. I ordered 2 cabin filters of different part numbers from eurocarparts for the cabin filter. One is a standard type and the, other charcoal activated. I've fitted the charcoal activated ...

Re: Changing oil filter housing gasket - anything else while I'm there

No, just the hatched style casting area on the block. I can't get a picture as there is so much stuff in the way under the inlet manifold.

I'm going to give the car a full service w[hile I'm at it and so far have

Oil filter
Air filter
Cabin filter
Pollen filter
Oil
Spark plugs
Ccv and all 4 pipes ...

Re: Changing oil filter housing gasket - anything else while I'm there

Hi Alan, it's not the filter cap.  The actual housing part is dry, it is the ribbed part of the engine block that has the oil on it where the housing meets.  Thanks for the suggestion

Changing oil filter housing gasket - anything else while I'm there

I'm just ordering the new gasket as I believe I have quite a bad leak from the oil filter housing (it is the highest point on the engine I can see oil. Underneath the car has oil all over the sump pan, hoses etc and cleaning it off hasn't really helped pin point it so I'm going with the ofh first ...

iPhone to cd changer converter

Hello everyone, not been on for a while since my 4.6is collapsed it's cam chain guides and emptied my bank.....but I'm back with a hopefully more sensible 3.0 sport facelift.

My question is, I currently have the factored sat nav but no dsp. I would like to play music through the standard set up and ...

Re: v8 only running on one bank

Just a quick update as i realise how frustrating it can be when there is no closure to a topic.

Turned out to be the Vanos control solenoid for that bank. Replaced with a new one from BMW (about £80) and all sorted :-)............................ until 17 miles later when the cam chain guides broke ...

[quote="shadrack"]
i would try and find someone to re build your engine, a second hand unit is a gamble, at least if you re build your own you know its right, also i may be wrong but despite yours been a nice colour combo i think 3-4k isnt going to happen for a car that needs 2k+ worth of engine ...

Re: 4.6is engine failure!!! Any one know of an engine for sale or a rebuilder?

I am in West Yorkshire.

The problem is that you do not know the damage to the bottom end if any so you could change the chains and guides and then find there is more damage than that after a 2000 pound bill. I think if it doesnt sell the engine needs to come out but i would like to find a ...

Re: 4.6is engine failure!!! Any one know of an engine for sale or a rebuilder?

Hi weirdfish, yes that is my x5 on eBay. I have listed it at that price as it's the minimum I would take, but if it does not sell I will keep it and carry out the repair. I'm not wanting to re list time and again if it doesn't sell so I am covering all cases as I don't want to miss out on any ...

4.6is engine failure!!! Any one know of an engine for sale or a rebuilder?

Hi everyone, after the worst 6 weeks of vehicle ownership in my life ( and possibly the most expensive, which is saying something considering I had a tvr cerbera previously ) it has been confirmed the guide rails have broken and the engine is requiring changing or rebuilding. Does anyone know if ...
